The Art of Layering

Layering – one of the most necessary trend in autumn and winter. When it’s cold outside but warm inside, the layering will keep you both hot and cool. But layering is very challenging and not so easy to do. If you don’t know how to layer your clothes properly then your outfit can very quickly go from looking stylish to, well a bit of a mismatch. Mastering how to layer your clothes takes time, and practice, it’s endless experimenting with clothes. There is some basic rules that will help you. If you follow them you’ll master this fabulous trend.

What is layering actually?

Layering means that you wear several layers of clothes (layering without layers is impossible, right?) and all of your clothes should look great as an ensemble, as well as standalone items. So rule number one is basically making sure each separate piece looks good alone as well as with other pieces.

Materials

Don’t be to scared of mixing textures. Play with them, this stage is very easy, it’s very hard to mess up. Here is minimal chance to make a mistake. It’s best to incorporate a mix of materials when styling a layered look. If you use all of the same fabrics, your look will come off as heavy and unstylish (it can add the appearance of unwanted weight as well). Just one thing to keep in mind: when you mix materials, start with the thinnest layer and finish with the thickest one. This is not an absolute rule, but usually, it gives the outfit a regular sense of depth.

Colors

When it comes to layering clothes, one of the issues is the color situation. When you’re wearing lots of different items of clothing, the risk of colors clashing becomes a lot larger. It’s important to make sure that the colors you’re wearing complement each other and don’t ruin the look of your outfit. Best way is to take different tones of one color or pairing classic colors that stick good together, like blue and camel, burgundy and green, navy and mustard, black and white. But nothing too bright or too random!

Patterns

The choice of Patterns is a very risky thing. Your outfit can very quickly go from interesting and exciting to completely off. So if you want to go the safe way – avoid too many patterns, be sure to wear clothes in simple block colors. But if you think that life without patterns is boring, make sure that several patterns doesn’t completely clash, avoid same patterns on different clothes.

Body shape

What most people tend to do is to over-layer that causes the outfit look bulky and messy. People end up giving their body a square or round shape, making the look unattractive and overdressed. In order to avoid this, tuck in your first layer of shirts, wear sleeveless turtlenecks or tie a belt over your layers to create some sort of shape.
